How does art work, how does an artist work? At this exhibition we focus on the process in the result of which the creative action of the artist becomes the social action of art. Its heart is performance art, often fleeting, based on momentary action, recorded and remaining active through an object, documentation, film or photography. The act may take place in the public space, at a gallery or a studio. However, it is always through the act that the artist involves himself or herself in a community. Regardless of the medium and the form, art is immersed in common experience, which it shapes, comments and reflects upon. The works at the exhibition concern a wide range of contemporary phenomena and issues related to historical experience and unrelenting social, political, economic and cultural change. We refer to them in the exhibition space in the form of hashtags.
The collection we present is another stage in the communitisation of the actions of the artist and art. Its core is the Gdańsk Collection of Contemporary Art, which has been accumulated by the Municipality of Gdańsk and handed over as a deposit to the National Museum in Gdańsk. First and foremost, it consists of the work of local artists, especially sensitive to the challenges of the present day in which they participate through art.
