Piotr Wyrzykowski

Piotr Wyrzykowski (aka Peter Style), ur. 1968 w Gdańsku, twórca performansów medialnych, aplikacji mobilnych, prac wideo, fotografii, projektów internetowych, instalacji, scenografii i działań w przestrzeni publicznej. Należy do grona najważniejszych artystów eksperymentujących z językiem sztuki, eksploruje kreatywny potencjał współczesnych mediów komunikacyjnych.

Studiował architekturę wnętrz, następnie malarstwo w Państwowej Wyższej Szkole Sztuk Plastycznych w Gdańsku (dzisiaj Akademia Sztuk Pięknych). Dyplom uzyskał w Pracowni Intermedialnej prof. Witosława Czerwonki (1995). Obecnie pracuje jako asystent na Wydziale Malarstwa macierzystej uczelni.

Od lat 90. aktywnie uczestniczy we współtworzeniu gdańskiego środowiska artystycznego, angażując się w inicjatywy twórcze i działania społecznościowe.

Wyrzykowski współtworzył Otwarte Atelier, którego siedziba mieściła się w budynku dawnej łaźni miejskiej (obecnie CSW Łaźnia). Był wiceprezesem Fundacji Wyspa Progress, a obecnie jest członkiem rady Kolonii Artystów. Współtworzył kolektywy Venom Underground (w duecie z Virusem – Adamem Popkiem) i Ziemia Mindel Würm (wspólnie z Rogulusem – Markiem Rogulskim). Był współzałożycielem i dyrektorem artystycznym grupy C.U.K.T. (Centralny Urząd Kultury Technicznej), prekursorsko wykorzystującej internet do działań artystycznych i aktywistycznych.

Laureat m.in. pierwszej nagrody na Międzynarodowym Festiwalu Mediów WRO ’95 oraz drugiej na WRO’97. Nominowany do Nagrody Fundacji Deutsche Bank - Spojrzenia (2008). Jego prace znajdują się w licznych kolekcjach w Polsce i na świecie.

Piotr Wyrzykowski (aka Peter Style), b. 1968 in Gdańsk, is the author of media performances, mobile applications, video works, photographs, internet projects, installations, scenography, and activities in the public space. One of the most important artists experimenting with the language of art, Wyrzykowski explores the creative potential of contemporary communication media.

He studied interior design, and later painting at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (today the Academy of Fine Arts). He obtained a diploma in the Intermedia Studio of Prof. Witosław Czerwonka (1995). Currently, he works as an assistant at the Faculty of Painting of his alma mater.

Since the 1990s, he has been actively participating in the life of the Gdańsk artistic milieu, engaging in creative initiatives and community activities.

Wyrzykowski was a co-founder of Otwarte Atelier, which was located in the building of the former municipal bathhouse (now Łaźnia CCA). He was vice-president of the Wyspa Progress Foundation and is currently a member of the board of the Artists' Colony. He co-founded the Venom Underground collective (in tandem with Virus – Adam Popek) and Ziemia Mindel Würm (together with Rogulus – Marek Rogulski). He was a co-founder and artistic director of the C.U.K.T. (Central Office of Technical Culture) group, pioneering the use of the Internet for artistic and activist activities.

He is a laureate of, among others, the first prize at the WRO '95 International Media Festival and the second prize at WRO '97. He was nominated for the Deutsche Bank Spojrzenia Foundation Prize (2008). His works are held in numerous collections in Poland and abroad.

Prophetically entitled Only those who planned will survive, the piece refers to the apocalypse anticipated by all generations.

Piotr Wyrzykowski attempts to illustrate the systemic and violent policy towards European societies, using extensive media. Transporting the events of everyday life underground creates negative associations: from being forced to hide from persecutors, for example during WWII, to the enslavement of children and women by deviants or pimps. The formal aspect of the videos enhances the atmosphere of horror: the image is black and white, high-contrast; the vignette frames seem to come from an archival record created decades ago. The video is accompanied by an ambient sound that seems to emanate from the abyss.

Wyrzykowski turns our attention towards the politicization of everyday life and control. In this installation, he shows how far the system of power penetrates into personal space and determines the actions of individuals. Both the world in which we’ll have to survive and the awareness of this inevitability in the face of new threats are both oppressive.

The Performance Archive consists of items from the first half of the 1990s, when performances in front of the public were Piotr Wyrzykowski’s fundamental form of artistic expression. It is both a testimony to the formation of the artist's creative programme and an expression of consistent statements about performance and the artist’s understanding of the ways in which the body experiences media that establish new areas of communication and accumulation and strengthen and expand the spatial and temporal dimensions of bodily activity. The themes present in early performances are developed in Wyrzykowski’s later work.
