Michał Szlaga, ur. 1978 w Gdańsku, absolwent Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Gdańsku (fotografia, intermedia). Od 2000 roku dokumentuje zmiany zachodzące na terenach stoczniowych w Gdańsku. Jest autorem takich projektów, jak subiektywny pamiętnik fotograficzny Polska Dziennik, Global Prosperity, który zrealizował wspólnie z Maxem Cegielskim w formie podróży do Indii trasą statków wyprodukowanych w Stoczni Gdańskiej, czy Odyseja #1, morska podróż z Tomaszem Kopcewiczem wzdłuż wybrzeży Europy i Północnej Afryki. Szlaga zainteresowany jest krytyczną rejestracją rzeczywistości w kraju, w najbliższym kręgu i w przestrzeni publicznej w formie bezpośredniego fotoreportażu, cykle: Polska – Reality (2007–2016), Pikselowe Prostytutki (2007–2016). Stocznia Szlaga (2013) to książka zawierająca fotografie Szlagi ukazujące proces transformacji terenów Stoczni Gdańskiej. Z kolei Brama. Michał Szlaga (2021) ukazuje wielość i różnorodność wydarzeń odbywających się w sąsiedztwie historycznej Bramy nr 2 i placu Solidarności.

Michał Szlaga, b. 1978 in Gdańsk, is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (photography, intermedia). Since 2000, he has been documenting changes taking place in the shipyard areas in Gdańsk. He is the author of projects such as the subjective photographic diary Polska Dziennik, Global Prosperity, carried out together with Max Cegielski in the form of a trip to India on the route of ships produced in the Gdańsk Shipyard, or Odyssey # 1 – a sea journey with Tomasz Kopcewicz along the coasts of Europe and North Africa. Szlaga is interested in the critical chronicling of Polish reality, both in his immediate circles and within the public space, in the form of direct photojournalism [Poland – Reality (2007–2016), Pixel Prostitutes (2007–2016)]. Stocznia Szlaga (2013) is a book containing Szlaga’s photographs showing the transformation processes of the Gdańsk Shipyard areas; Brama. Michał Szlaga (2021) documents the multiplicity and variety of events taking place in the vicinity of the historic Gate No. 2 and Solidarity Square.

The installation documents the transformations in the area of the former Gdańsk Shipyard, perceived as the place of birth, boom, and decline of the ‘Solidarity’ workers’ movement and an example of the thriving shipbuilding industry. For a number of years (1999-2013), Szlaga recorded the progressing destruction of the shipyard. He photographed the architectural transformations, the devastation of grand, and 19th-century brick buildings, such as the Director’s Villa with a library, as a symbol of the decline of the culture and intellectual thought that had been present since the establishment of the shipyard. The muted colours and expertly composed landscapes and portraits are a symbolic record of Poland’s transformation, the wasted human potential and painful processes of change that took place in the countries of Eastern and Central Europe.
