Honorata Martin

Honorata Martin, ur. 1984 w Gdańsku, artystka multimedialna, performerka, malarka, fotografka. W latach 2004–2009 studiowała na Wydziale Malarstwa na Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Gdańsku, dyplom uzyskała w pracowni prof. Mieczysława Olszewskiego, a aneks z Intermediów u prof. Wojciecha Zamiary. Od 2013 roku pracuje na Wydziale Rzeźby i Intermediów na macierzystej uczelni. Uprawia performans, realizuje akcje i prace wideo, tworzy rzeźby i instalacje. Jednym z naczelnych postulatów Martin jest bezpośrednie doświadczenie oraz wyjście poza system instytucjonalny. Artystkę zajmuje m.in. przekraczanie i pokonywanie własnych lęków i ograniczeń, zarówno fizycznych jak i mentalnych. Istotne jest także doświadczenie relacji międzyludzkich, gościnności, jak również samotności. Prace Honoraty Martin były prezentowane na licznych wystawach indywidualnych i zbiorowych, jest laureatką wielu nagród.

Honorata Martin, b. 1984 in Gdańsk, is a multimedia artist, performer, painter, and photographer. In the years 2004–2009 she studied at the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. She obtained a diploma in the studio of professor Mieczysław Olszewski, and additional credits in Intermedia with professor Wojciech Zamiara. Since 2013 she has been working at the Faculty of Sculpture and Intermedia at her alma mater. She does performances, makes actions and video works, creates sculptures and installations. One of Martin’s main postulates is direct experience and moving beyond the institutional system. The artist is interested among others in overcoming and moving beyond her own fears and limitations, both physical and psychological, as well as experiencing interpersonal relationships, hospitality, as well as loneliness. Honorata Martin’s works have been presented at numerous solo and group exhibitions, and she is a laureate of a number of awards.

Balconies is a recording of a performance created among high-rise residential buildings in various parts of Gdańsk. The artist has personal connections with these places; they define her identity and conjure up strong emotions. The artist’s gesture of risking her life is like hiding from the family that has remained behind closed doors, a form of a definitive solution. She resembles the falling Icarus in a painting attributed to Pieter Brueghel, disappearing unnoticed among the chaos of everyday life.

The view is more beautiful from above is a recording of a performance realized in real time. Martin balances on the edge, the borderline state between life and death, and subjects the viewer to the torture of fearing for her life. The piece was created while Martin reflected on theories of being. The artist rejects the idea of a world order based on an organized system – for example a religious system, which she sees as obsolete and empty – in favour of developing her own world view – a closer consideration of nature and its rules, questioning the primacy of man and testing to what extent she is the agent of her own fate.
